Seven Over rated Indian Celebrities
It's a week of 7 says Corrine from write tribe.com
It is also a week of return of humor and movie masala. So let us take stock of 7 top over rated celebrities/actors in Bollywood. Off course this is my personal opinion well echoed by many others and I carry nothing against these celebrities. In fact, I quite like them but that doesn't change fact and our basic wish that they should do more, live more rather than PR more!
The list goes like-
2) Sonam Kapoor: The fashionista and hi flying daughter of Anil Jhakaas Kapoor. She is known more for the dresses, make up, shoes she worn at different events or jokes she plugged on her counterparts or others in media like Shobha de, Aishwarya Rai or Ranbir Kapoor. When it comes to movie, the pretty actress is still to open her Bollywood register else she will be soon moved to the pages of glam society and endorsements only which is already quite crowded.
4) John Abraham: One of the dashing male model, better known as Bip-asha Basu' boyfriend after Didn't- know-u Morea, he really set hearts on fire when made his on screen debut but was soon doused them off. Those cute dimples are soon running their charm and his stint as producer is keeping him warm but acting? Well a walk in to Madras Cafe would save him some grace.
5) Sanjay Dutt- Pl do not hate me for this but can some one tell me what is Mr Datt's claim to fame except for the fact that he is son of adorable Sunil Dutt & gracious Nargis Dutt. Yes, he did Munna Bhai. So did circuit too. Too much of "Sanju Baba" chaperoning has ruined a good looking actor (yes he could emote well as well) and reduced him to third run movies like Policegiri. Come on Sanju baba, time to move away from useless lackey, alcohol and do justice to your potential.
Well that was my list of seven most over rated Bollywood celebrities. Do add yours, if you have any.
The only person that I feel is still under-rated is- The Legend Amitabh Bachchan! He is the only complete package of- Acting, looks, screen presence, marketing and blah blah. God, why do not they make more like him. Mr. Bachchan, you are still so under utilized and how much we wish to get to see more of you!

I agree to all except Kajol. I quite like her but yeah she isn't versatile...others I completely agree :)
ReplyDeleteCool :) I too was very unsure of Kajol till last minute but it's mostly scripts that worked for her. She wasn't as good as lot of her counterparts.

DeleteAs a U.S. citizen, I am not familiar with any of these actors, BUT I agree that most actors are over-rated. This society puts way too much emphasis on actors and professional athletes. Don't get me started - LOL.

DeleteI think you don't watch much Indian Films , Sanjay Dutt's Vastav,Khalnayak,Naam,Gumrah,etc. Kajol's Fana,Dushman,Gupt,etc and also Sonam Kapoor is good in Ranjhana.

DeleteI feel khalnayak was over rated and was successful cause of Madhuri's number and SD's Jail thing. Believe he can do much better like Vaastav and all. Kajol' fana, gupt didn't have much to write home about. The movies were good and worked cause of script. Even then that didn't justify for the fanfare created around her. NOpes!
Ranjhana is just one movie given the hype created around Sonam.
Given by such records ppl like ANupam Kher and Syed Jaffery should be top stars.
I am not denying that they r not good in what they did but what they did is not sufficient enough for all the hype they thrive in!

ReplyDeleteHave to disagree on a number of choices you made. It looks like you are looking at the films the said actors were in rather than their talent. Also, although you've included people like Shahid and John, I don't think they have ever been really taken as actors of high calibre. They have always been mediocre thus would not use overrated for them.
ReplyDeleteAccepted your point, the idea here is actors/ stars/ celebrities who were over rated which means their talent non withstanding, their contribution to the real craft v/s the hype created around them does not match.

ReplyDeleteEveryone is different(Yes, i am talking about actor as well as fans).
We all have different perspective about a movie and i think that perspective is closely related to our life(you know resemblance of characters/story to our life OR what we want our life to be).
But still, I think it does no harm to discuss our choices though.
So, for me Shahid, Sanju Baba and Kajol should not be there.

Well to me Aish is more on borderline than shahid and kajol put together. Sanju can be debatable- agreed. I have a very soft corner for him lolz...but Shahid- noway. Heard him giving tips to Vidya Balan and being high critic of hers when he need lot to be improved on his success/ projects front.
Totally agree - except Kajol. Don't know if the scripts she got were good or she was good, but she really shouldn't be on a list that has someone like Sonam eww Kapoor...

DeleteIt sure is an endless debate but bollywood has more "overrated" actors and I am a kajol fan and not just due to DDLJ . I loved her high spirited personality in many other roles and in general outside the films. She came back in Fanaa and My name is Khan and it was good to see her though movies r not my heart favs..
ReplyDeleteAishwarya has few cool films like HDDCS or raincoat . Not an excellent actress and not bad .... Even the rest Not sure if they r so overrated but ya those one or two films they acted r watch worthy. The only one whom I highy dislike in this list is Sonam kapoor

Sure...However Abhishek Bachchan has long off fallen off the celebrity radar and except dhoom, he is not part of any other ambitious projects anymore. But point noted.
DeleteReg Akshay Kumar, I heard he is a delight actor to work with. Unlike other male stars he is known to be highly professional and empathetic towards people he work.

DeleteI agree mysay. However, Irrfan, Paresh Rawal and others too are being loved more by audience. Ask me, a lot of time I watch movies cause of these actor's presence in it and leads.
DeleteThe point is that they r technically superior and needn't create foofraw like others mentioned in the list and rather concentrate on quality work.

Thank you for this post as I loved not seeing Salman on the list. I do feel he is over rated but then I love him so much that can bear to admit it. When I think from your angle I dont remember any big hit that Kajol has had without King Khan, one movie that I loved her in was Dushmani( she did act well in that film). Our Aisha(sonam) and Munna( Sanjay)totally agree with you. Aishwarya in Guzaarish makes me think twice. Loved this post that I am going on typing, guess I should stop and wait for your next post.

DeleteYup Sallu is not featuring here as I did it as "over-rated " celebrity and not actors. If we do actors sometime, will include too.
Dushman was a good movie. Kajol could have done more good roles as compare to foofraw that is created around her since beginning.
Ekta everything is overstated in India :) we are kind of herd followers in a way

DeleteAmitabh Bachpan is not Under rated, he is superstar infact he got more than he deserves, you know who is under rated, Actors like naseeruddin shah, Om Puri, Rajpal yadav, Manoj Vajpaeyi, Mukesh tiwari, Piyush mishra. The one from Theaters, these are the real actors.
ReplyDeleteMay be you don't know or may be you do but even Amitabh bachpan got his break because of his family's relation with Gandhi family. He made 11 flops movies before zanzeer.
BTW, i completely agree with you and your list and would like to add that every single So called superstars & Crickters are over rated. They are considered like God & Goddess in our country.
The actors who you mentioned are really good except Rajpal Yadav and Manoj Vajpeyi who off late have lost their sheen and end up being stereotyped.

nice blog....but,may be sanjay dutt don't deserve to be in this list, ppl fell for sanju long before munna bhai hpnd....he is still remembered for his roles in vaastav and khalnayak.........and considering actresses...it has been always like throw some sweet expressions and look gorgeous and the above mentioned actresses have passed in doing so... they were not offered much, so they couldnt give much.... just a opiniion...no offence intended...

ReplyDeleteRenuka, the reason I added Kajol here is solely based on the films I saw her acting in. A lot of films, she used same expressions like the actresses in west. Originality lacked there. For eg- If you watch one of her latest movie- We are the Family, which was inspired from Susan Saradon n Julia Robert's Stepmother. You will find that she copied exact every expression of the famous star, scene by scene, dialogue by dialogue.

You misunderstood me. I am not saying that Kajol is a misfit in this list. If you call her overrated, it makes sense, because she's such a big star. But, I found your list boring because you added names like John, Shahid, Anushka, Sonam....who haven't achieved anything significant to be called overrated. Kajol and Aishwarya can be called overrated actors because they have been so popular and some may not like them. It's okay. Even Kajol thinks she's overrated! (she said it on koffee with karan). I just want to add one thing about kajol that she didn't become a big star because she had the best acting skills, but because she has a unique personality and powerful screen presence (and that's what click most of the time with the larger audience).
